Hopeworks presents at MIT "Forgotten Cities" Workshop

Angel Rodriguez, Yesenia Nieves, Elyse Smith, Tiana Davis and Father Jeff in Boston.Father Jeff, Tiana Davis, Yesenia Nieves, Angel Rodriguez and Elyse Smith flew to Boston, on November 3rd, to present at a luncheon talk at MIT.  Hopeworks and the reality of Camden was the focus of the talk. Each youth helped present one specific aspect of Hopeworks to the interested audience.  While there, the the group received a tour of MIT and visited Harvard Square.


Keep December 3rd Open

Open HouseHopeworks Board of Directors is hosting an Open House at Hopeworks on Friday, December 3, 2004. Hopeworks doors will be open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Our youth and staff will be providing our visitors with tours and information about Hopeworks. Refreshments will be served. Come join us for a day of food, fun and surprises! All are welcome!


Holy Name Students come to Hopeworks

Holy Name Students at Hopeworks TrainingEvery Wednesday and Thursday Hopeworks comes alive with the fourth grade class from Holy Name School. Mark Ford, Hopeworks Lead Trainer has created a program that

the children can understand and learn at Hopeworks. Ms. Maggie Mattern, the fourth teacher accompanies her students and is studying the Hopeworks Curriculum.


Hopeworks Receives WIB Grant

Hopeworks successfully wrote and received a workforce investment grant from the Camden County Workforce Investment Board. This grant allows Hopeworks to hire a Literacy Director and will give Hopeworks the opportunity to develop a Literacy Program.


NCAL Literacy Workshop

NCAL Literacy WorkshopOn November 9th, Fr. Jeff and Jim Bopp presented at the National Center for Adult Literacy (NCAL) first annual YouthHub Workshop. Fr. Jeff and Jim presented on the topic of Literacy and Technology and how this can encourage youth to bring positive change to their communities.

Fourth Annual Youth Development Conference: Inspiring Community Action

Representin'...Yourself, Your Community, Your World was the theme for the November 12th Conference sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Federation of Settlements and the United Way, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Youth Development ConferenceFr. Jeff presented to the adults attending this conference, while the youth along with Kathleen Deitch and Jim Bopp,SJ attended many of the workshops presented by the youth and adults. The youth attending the conference were: Luis Rodriguez, Jorge Torres, Alex Mercado, Samantha Mojica, Jaleesa Gonzalez, Jamaal Johnson, Randell Cook, Isaiah Jones, Nicole Reyes and Cynthia Reyes.  Hopeworks youth came back filled with ideas and enlightened by the presentations they attended.


GIS Youth Present at Penn

The Cartographic Modeling Lab at Penn invited Hopeworks GIS Youth Present at PennGIS team to present at their GIS day on November 9, 2004.  Natashia Wilson and Yesenia Nieves presented on projects they have worked on at Hopeworks to youth in the Philadelphia area. Rahsaan Smith and William James also attended the day.

Welcome the Newest Addition to HopeworksJpeg is the Hopeworks pet

Through a unanimous vote of the youth and staff, Hopeworks traveled far and wide to the NJSPCA to bring home the one and only cat of his kind....J-Peg.  Jay has been a welcome addition to the Hopeworks family. He has been with us only a short time and is already the most popular here (excluding Fr. Jeff).

Welcome Jim Bopp, SJ
Jim Bopp the Literacy DirectorJim Bopp, SJ joined the Hopeworks staff as its new Literacy Director.  Jim will be responsible for implementing Hopeworks' new integrated literacy program. Jim, who is in formation to become a Jesuit priest, actually was in Camden 5 years ago when Hopeworks was first started. Welcome back Jim!

Tiana Davis Joins Web Production

Tiana Davis joins web production.Congratulations to Tiana Davis who recently completed her production exam and has entered web production.  Tiana is planning on beginning college in January.  Nice job Tiana!


Jorge Torres Enters Advanced Production

Jorge Torres finished his personal web site and has entered "Advanced Production" in the Hope Through School program. Congratulations Jorge!


GIS Youth Train Others

Elyse Smith, Natashia Wilson and Yesenia Nieves have been working on Saturdays to train youth from the GIS Youth Train OthersVillage Arts and Humanities program in Philadelphia, PA.  Hopeworks GIS team are teaching the Philadelphia youth how to survey in their neighborhoods. 


Welcome JJC Youth

Every Tuesday Hopeworks looks forward to seeing youth from several JJC facilities in the area. This month we were especially pleased to welcome Will Rutherford as a full time trainee Will Rutherford. Will was working on his training while in the JJC program and after coming home decided to come on board full time. Will plans to attend Camden County College in the near future. Keep up the good work Will!
