Three Youth Present Personal Websites

Our training room has been particularly busy during October. Three youth finished and presented their personal websites during the month. Read on to find out more about each of the youth.

Wesley

Wesley completed his personal website after being in the Hopeworks day program for just 6 weeks.  He took his production test soon after and started last week in a full time production position in our web business. Click here to see Wesley's personal web site!

Briana

Briana presented her personal website and is now on her way to a job in production. She is working hard on her production test as she balances classes and prepares to enter college in January!

 

Nefertiti

Nefertiti was one of the co-recipients of the Hopeworks Leadership Award this year. She has long and hard on her web site and is currently taking her production test. She is a star in our Hope Through School program and hopes to move to a job in our GEB program in November.

Congratulations to these 3 trainees and LOOK OUT next month for more personal websites as Sil and Anthony move closer to finishing the curriculum!


Shawn Mack Presents at Girard College

On Wednesday October 22, 2008, Hopeworks Literacy Director, Shawn Mack was awarded an Honorary Diploma from Girard College in Philadelphia. A special Chapel service was held where Shawn Mack addressed the 750 member student body.  In his speech, he challenged the students to strive for the best even through difficult circumstances. He shared his personal story of difficulties and triumphs as a child while attending Girard.  Girard College President Judge Dominic Cermele remarked that in his sixteen years as president, Mr. Mack’s speech was one of the most passionate. Shawn was joined by members of his family and Hopeworks youth, staff and Board Member Skip Torreson.

Youth Prepare to Start College in December

Six Hopeworks youth are preparing to enroll in classes at Camden County College for the Spring 2009 semester.  Four will be new college students! They are filling out applications and financial aid forms in anticipation of enrollment. Anthony, Briana, Sil, and Wesley will be be starting at Camden County in January, and they are all very excited. When asked what he thought about going to Camden County, Wesley said "I'm proud to be starting college. I'm looking forward to it." Jamaal and Sylvon are continuing at Camden County. We are proud of our youth and can't wait to work with them as they experience success in their collegiate careers!


Literacy Volunteers

Hopeworks N’ Camden is looking for Literacy Volunteers for our after school program. As a Literacy volunteer, you will have the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of Camden youth.  Volunteers are needed in our Hope Through School after school program which operates Monday – Thursday from 3:45pm – 6:00pm.  Interested persons should have a desire to help youth achieve and be able to dedicate at least one hour per week.

Holy Name Typing Program in Full Swing

The Holy Name Typing Program is now in full swing! This year's program welcomes thirty seven typers into Hopeworks every week. Wednesdays we open our doors to sixteen third graders and Thursdays we welcome twenty-one fourth graders. The students use the Type to Learn program for one hour a week and have also started to learn to use the internet as a search tool. We look forward to sharing in their energy and enthusiasm over the next year! Even JPEG our cat loves it when they come to Hopeworks!


St. Matthews Supports Hopeworks

We would like to give a special thank you to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Moorestown, NJ for their generous donation to Hopeworks. Welcome, Meaghan Messner!

We are proud to welcome Meaghan to our staff as the new Relationship and Development Manager.  Meaghan has recently completed a year of service in Cambodia, earning her Master's degree in Public Administration in International Public Service and Development from Rutgers University.  A native of upstate New York, she is a proud Buffalo Bills fan and hopes for a winter full of snow.  Meaghan is excited to be working in Camden again and is looking forward to meeting and working with people involved in and interested in continuing to build Hopeworks.

FJ and Patrick Travel to San Francisco for DreamForce

Father Jeff and Patrick are preparing to travel to the San Francisco Bay Area to participate in the 2008 DreamForce Conference. They will join thousands of other Salesforce.com users to further their knowledge of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and to learn ways to use Salesforce to help the Hopeworks mission!


Hopeworks Hosts Parent Night

On Wednesday October 22nd  Hopeworks welcomed parents of our trainees to see the work and the progress that their youth have made. Each parent got a tour of Hopeworks and talked to our formation, training and literacy directors about their youth's goals and D.R.E.A.M.S. and jobs!


New Board Chair!

David Papuga has been elected to be the new Hopeworks Board Chair. David currently works as the parish administrator at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Moorestown, NJ where he also serves as a deacon.  He and Father Jeff actually team preach during masses!
