Mapping Civil War Veterans
|
The project that we are doing is mapping the graves of Civil War veterans in Harleigh Cemetery. Our team includes: Nefertiti Bryant, Patrick Osborne, Rebecca Schelmety, and Luis Rosa. First, we locate the grave by using the cemetery map. After locating the grave we take a picture of the tombstone and then use our GPS to mark the spot. This will allow us to make a map of the cemetery that shows all of the veterans’ graves. Our map will show the location of the grave and a picture of the stone, and it will have information about each soldier. This project is giving us new and exciting things to learn. This will benefit us when we start to learn about the Civil War. We ’ll already know where some of the soldiers are buried! This project also helps us with computers. We’ve learned lots of new software as well as learning how to use the GPS.

| Camden is Getting a New Road Map |
|
This summer, half of Hopeworks’ GEB team: Sylvon Bryant, Adriana Castro, Edwin Martinez, and Michael Osborne, is working on a map of Camden. This map will contain places such as hospitals, schools, post offices, etc. We are now half way through our project, and it is coming along very well. We hope that by the end of the summer we will have created an effective map to sell. Not only are we making an online map but we are going to publish a folding paper map that people will be able to buy! We want people to have a better understanding of how to get around the community of Camden.

| Service Learning Article |
Our Hope Through School summer trainees are designing and implementing a service project of their own choice which they will complete at the end of our program. We will call this a “neighboring action” to highlight the important role that our youth play in this community. In preparation for this, our Formation Director, Patrick Keenan, attended the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Philadelphia, July 16-18, through a generous scholarship from the Delaware Valley Grantmakers. While there, Hopeworks entered into the discussions about civic engagement and service within urban areas and with teenage youth. Some of the sessions Patrick attended were: “Youth Voice: Strengthening Neighborhoods,” “Young Leaders,” and “Encourage, Engage and Empower: How to Promote Volunteering in Disadvantaged Communities.” Each session helped him understand ways in which we can better work with our youth to affect positive change within our North Camden neighborhood. Look for a follow up on our neighboring action in the next newsletter!

| Welcome Louis Canelli and Alexa Smialowicz! |
For four weeks this summer Lou and Alexa will be working one-on-one with the GEB youth and Day trainees. They are working with our Literacy Director as tutors. They are also coordinating the summer Literacy project for our college enrolled Production staff. Lou and Alexa are graduate students in the University of Pennsylvania’s ten-month Master's program. The students start together as a cohort in July and graduate with their Master's in education and their certification in a secondary subject area in May. In the summer the students take two courses in the afternoons. Two mornings a week they volunteer in a community based organization that works with urban youth. The aim of this experience is to expose students to urban teenagers and to show them what some students are doing during the summer. Welcome Lou and Alexa!

| Hope Through School Travels to the National Liberty Museum
|

On Friday, July 20, 2007 Hope Through School traveled to the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. The youth explored concepts of liberty and freedom through glass sculpture and interactive exhibits. The youth were exposed to the stories of “ordinary people” who’ve done “extraordinary things”. They reflected on their experience by creating a sketch of one of the many glass sculptures that are on display in the museum. They are also using the things that they learned about community building as they plan their neighboring action.
