The Hopeworks Summer program will be in full swing on July 2nd! Check out all that will be happening this summer:

Summer GEB

This summer our Web And GIS teams have combined skills and talents and created a new force at Hopeworks:  GEB!  Starting next week there will be 2 GEB  Teams busy working on projects in Camden and each one will be led by one of our 2 Jesuit Scholastic volunteers.  A group led by Sean Toole will be mapping historic Harleigh Cemetery in Camden.  Harleigh Cemetery is where many famous Camden citizens have been buried including Walt Whitman... click here to read more

Service Learning
What will happen when 15 youth from Camden take to the streets this summer?  No one knows.  That’s because this summer we are challenging our Hope Through School youth to design and implement their own community action.  Recognizing that each trainee has the potential to be a positive force for change, our trainees will reflect on a time they made a difference within their family, group of friends, faith community or school.  Harvesting the energy they have for good works from these stories of success, we will ask the trainees to address the possibilities for peace amidst the violence of their community. They will have the freedom to do anything that will mobilize their voices for peace and will gain the attention of our North Camden neighborhood ... click here to read more

Hopeworks Youth Make the Mark in Literacy sun
Great things will be happening in Literacy this summer! Our Hope Through School youth will be receiving individualized instruction in reading, writing and mathematics. With the assistance of several volunteer tutors, our Literacy Director, Leigh Anne Purnell will be able to provide a total of over 220 hours of individualized instruction! Our goal is to have every trainee show at least one grade level of growth by the end of the summer program. Our Hope Through School youth will also be taking on another Digital Storytelling project. Digital Storytelling provides a tremendous opportunity for our youth. The project gives each trainee the chance to express themselves in away that is unique, vibrant and permanent. We are looking forward to a fun and productive summer!

Fun in The Sun Wrap- Up

Smiling Sun (Fun In The Sun Logo)Each day in June, money was flowing out of Father Jeff’s office (and hopefully into your hands).  We drew a new winner in our “Fun in the Sun” subscription series every day.  Those of you who purchased subscriptions had 30 opportunities to win up to 2007 dollars.  Check our website to see if you won!

Thanks to our subscribers, Hopeworks created 28 summer jobs, helping 28 youth earn money to achieve their D.R.E.A.M.S.  Our summer programs will challenge them to build skills necessary for a hope-filled future and this is only possible through your support.  Again, our gratitude.

Volunteer Spotlight : Mark Sarvary, Campbell Soup

Mark Sarvary is Executive Vice President and President-Campbell North America. He is also a volunteer tutor at Hopeworks ‘N Camden. Mark has been my tutor and mentor  for almost 2 months. Mark has helped me with my schoolwork and also taught me things about life that I will never forget. I look forward to Mark’s visits because he always has something new to teach me. Mark works with me to develop my plans for starting my own business. I plan to become a professional barber and have my own barbershop franchise. Mark is really interested in what I’m learning here at Hopeworks. We always talk about my progress and he encourages me to do better if I’m not doing everything that I should. He doesn't tell me what to do but he does help me to think through whatever problem I might be having. We need more volunteers like Mark here at Hopeworks!

-Kenyatta Benton, Day Trainee

Group Relations

Over the past few years, Hopework’s staff has had the opportunity to participate in various experiential leadership development programs based in the Group Relations model.  The Group Relations model began in London, England at the Tavistock Institute in the mid 20th century. At these trainings, the Hopeworks staff has participated in an experiential learning methodology allowing them to learn about unconscious processes within organizations and how to harness them for creativity and innovation. In July, Sabrina Gomez, Patrick Keenan and Father Jeff will participate in the “One World, One Spirit” group relations conference in San Diego. To find out more about the conference, click here.

"You Don't Know Me Until You Know Me"
On Wednesday, June 20th, the Hopeworks staff along with Mario Arriola and Angel Rodriguez all attended a workshop performance at the First Nazarene Baptist Church entitled, “You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me” sponsored by the United Way of Camden County. This show is a “one-person show that deals with the issues of race, discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and the emotional pain felt by special education children.” Michael Fowlin, who was the presenter and performer of the workshop, gave us a phenomenal and unforgettable performance. To find out more about Michael Fowlin and his one-person show check out his website by clicking here.
