Hopeworks Attends Hall Of Fame Dinner
Stretch limos, sparkling cider, ice sculptures, great food, celebration and acknowledgement of the Hopeworks program were all part of Father Jeff’s induction into the New Jersey Technology Hall Of Fame.  Thanks to the generosity of a kind benefactor, Father Jeff, Sean Dougherty and three youth---Sabrina Gomez, Mario Arriola and Dennis Thomas—all arrived in style in their 10 passenger limo!  It was quite the ride up from Camden to The Crystal Plaza in Livingston, NJ.  FJ had never been in a limo before so it was quite the treat for him.  The evening was superb and many of the folks in attendance spoke with the HW youth---intrigued by how we got here and exactly what Hopeworks does.  Mario, Sabrina and Dennis handled the questions and networking with aplomb! Thanks for all the support and a special congrats to Father Jeff on his induction!

Angel Accepted To St. Joseph's University
Congrats are also in order to Angel Rodriguez for earning a transfer scholarship to Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA.  Angel has worked very hard this year at Camden County College---challenging himself with classes and achieving high grades in the hopes of earning a scholarship to SJU.  His hard work paid off when he received his acceptance letter March 21st!  Angel is excited to begin his time on Hawk Hill!

Quiet on the Set …and … Action!

The rooms at Hopeworks were supercharged with energy for the entire week of March 12th as six of our Day Trainees participated in the first ever Hopeworks Digital Storytelling Project.  Ashley Garibay, Yvette Reyes, Manuel Zapata, Angel Rodriguez, Danny Castelan and Dennis Thomas all wrote, narrated, produced and edited videos that tell the stories of important events in their lives.  Leigh Anne Purnell and Sean Dougherty led the group through a week that started with trainees brainstorming story ideas.  Click here to read more...

Hopeworks Completes Hopeworks Hardware

Five youth have successfully completed the Hopeworks Hardware program and are now the owners of new computers!  Victor Dickerson, Sabrina Gomez, Ashley Garibay, Alfredo Baez and Yvette Reyes all worked very hard the last four weeks to learn about the inner workings of a computer.  Working with Camden Computers Inc., a local Camden business, all five youth were able to successfully master the skills of computer repair.  With this handy knowledge, they all ordered various components for their computers and then on March 20th, successfully put together their new computers!   All new PC owners were quite happy!!!!!

Leigh Anne Attends PEAK After School Conference

Hopeworks Literacy Director, Leigh Anne Purnell, attended the Literacy and Arts conference March 8 and 9th. The purpose of the conference was to expose after school practitioners to the numerous online professional development applications that have been developed by the National Partnership for Quality after school Learning. The workshops provided excellent information and instruction on tools and techniques that can be used to assist students of varying levels of ability. The workshop focused on designing Literacy and Arts activities for after school learning. The primary focus was on creating a learning environment that supports exploration and creative thinking, not to replicate the school day. Leigh Anne was exposed to many dynamic and innovative instructional techniques and she is looking forward to applying them all!

Create Jobs: Join The Fun In The Sun

Smiling Sun (Fun In The Sun Logo)Our goal this summer is to create 25 summer jobs for the youth of Camden.  These employees will be working for our GIS department surveying Camden and creating interactive maps.  To support this effort, the Hopeworks 2nd Annual Subscription Drive has gotten off to a great start! Subscriptions are selling well and many subscribers are purchasing subscriptions early to be part of our early bird drawing.  Anyone who purchases a ticket in the months of February and March will earn a chance to win in our early drawing in addition to the monthly subscription. If you would like to purchase a subscription or just find out more about this opportunity, please check out our link: www.hopeworks.org/jobs and print out a form. Remember, the proceeds of the subscription drive go toward funding summer jobs for our Hope Through School youth.  Please consider becoming a seller for the Subscription drive.  Selling ten copies of the subscription will earn you two extra chances to win during the month of June.

Inside View: Birthday Parties At Hopeworks
At Hopeworks, we try to be more than just a place to work, we try to create a family.  We celebrate each other's accomplishments here, but we also celebrate the events that are important in the individual lives of the youth and staff.  March was a big month for birthdays at Hopeworks, with staff members Leigh Anne Purnell and Tarren Anderson, along with youth Nefertiti Bryant and Jamaal Johnson celebrating birthdays this month.  Hopeworks staff assist in the celebration by baking a cake for each person's birthday.  Then youth and staff at Hopeworks get together to sing Happy Birthday, eating cake together.  These celebrations are just one more way Hopeworks maintains it's culture of optimism throughout the year.

SAVE THE DATE! 3rd Annual Celebration of Accomplishments Dinner - Sat., September 29, 2007

Hopeworks Youth Speak Out On The Radio!

Father Jeff, Kathleen Deitch, Ashley Garibay and Sabrina Gomez recently had an opportunity to be featured on the radio.  Lora Lewis, the host of Philadelphia Focus on 92.5 WXTU, interviewed the delegation about what interesting things have been going on at Hopeworks.  The interview covered a wide variety of topics ranging from training to college work.  The group was also given a tour of the facility and shown the other stations that operate there.  Listen to the interview via Windows Media or Quicktime.

Happy Birthday Joshua Springs!

Josh is from Naperville, Illinois and turned 9 years old in February.  This year instead of presents he asked his friends to make a donation to Hopeworks.  Joshua and his friends raised $200!

Thanks so much to Josh and his friends and family!

Happy Birthday from all of us at Hopeworks!

Hopeworks Youth Update

Congratulations to youth Adriana Castro, Mario Arriola, Angel Rodriguez, Manny Zapata, and Dennis Thomas for being nominated to our second monthly Success and Opportunity Achievers Dinner.  The dinner took place at the Golden Corral on Tuesday, March 20th.

GIS Update

The Hopeworks GIS Team recently completed a project for Camden County.  Based on tax and parcel data, the team was able to create some great park maps for the county to use. These maps will allow the county to clearly identify park areas, along with the parcels they are made of.
