Thanks to all at Bishop Dunne Catholic High School for such a great experience.
Hopeworks 2006 Friend Raiser Socials
Hopeworks began it's 2006 season of socials with the first in Mullica Hill, NJ. Father Jeff and Jen McCann, along with youth Sade Coley and Mario Arriola introduced about 20 people to Hopeworks, and explained how they could become involved. Sade and Mario mingled with the guests, presenting the Hopeworks movie on our portable tablets, as well as explaining what they do and what they have learned at Hopeworks. Big thanks to Francesca McClay, Hopeworks Board of Directors secretary for hosting the event, and Bonnie Shoemaker from the Public Relations Committee for coordinating!!
St. Louis Here We Come: April 29th, will see Sade, Mario, Father Jeff and Jen, along with fellow youth Sabrina Gomez, heading to St. Louis for another social. On Friday March 17, 2006 Literacy Director Leigh Anne Purnell took Ashley Matthews, Sueny Vela, Sade Coley, and Adriana Castro to the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission's 9th Annual Celebration of Womanhood Conference. The trainees joined many other girls from across Southern New Jersey in attending workshops on empowerment, self-esteem, decision making and body image. The young ladies who attended enjoyed the workshops as well as the keynote speakers. They interacted with girls from various backgrounds and different experiences. A great day was had by all!
Work Release Program: Partnership Between NJ Juvenile Justice Commission and Hopeworks
For over two years, the JJC (Juvenile Justice Commission of the State of New Jersey) and Hopeworks have been collaborating to bring youth to our program once a week. An exciting new element of this partnership was added this month when a JJC youth was granted work release privileges to attend our program. This is an exciting development as it allows JJC youth to move more quickly through our training, gain valuable skills and ready themselves for college.
Holy Name 3rd and 4th Graders Write Autobiographies
The Holy Name youth have been working very hard to hone their keyboarding skills. To improve their ability to focus on the content of what they are writing instead of where their fingers are moving, they were asked to write autobiographies. Here are some samples:
I was born in May 24, 1996 and born in D.R. My brother is a pain to me. My sister is crazy in our house. My mom is real funny. My dad works at an auto shop. My grandma is so nice and she is also the best. I play lots of games like Game Cube, bike riding, and playing with my neighbor. I don't like to play on the swing set.
-Argenis Calderon, 4th grade
I was born November 17, 1995 in Cooper Hospital. My mom is mostly a cooker and smart, my dad is a very hard worker and helps me get muscles. My sister always plays with me and cheers me up. I live in Camden, New Jersey. My favorite thing to do is play my video games and play basketball and football. My least favorite thing is running up the stairs to ge my dads shoes and doing chores.
-Raul Paneto, 4th grade
I was born in Boston on Oct. 21, 1996. I have three other people living with me. One of them is named Santos. He is my bro. He was born on Feb. 20, 1999. He was the third one to be born. I think he is the only one I play with all of the time when I am in the house. Then, we have my oldest brother his name is Namen. He is a teenager so he messes with me almost every day. Now here is my final person, she is my mom. She works at a new job. I live in Camden, NJ. Now I'm going to tell you what my favorite things are, they are playing around with my family and friends. Now I am going to talk about my least favorite thing, it is being mad at people. My favorite food is a cheeseburger.
-Nichee Hill, 3rd grade
I was born in March 27, 1996 in N.J. My name is Francine Santiago and I love butterflies. My dad's name is Frank. My mom's name is Myraim. I live in Camden. My favorite things to do is play with my friends and cousins and let them sleepover. I love all kinds of foods and my favorite place is Toy's R Us. I don't like some vegetables.
-Francine Santiago, 4th grade
Hopeworks Invited to Visit Federal Court in Philly
Hopeworks in Camden has been cordially invited to be guests of Justice Maryanne Trump-Barry at the Federal court in downtown Philadelphia. Justice Barry has been very generous in the past, and we are all looking forward to meeting her and taking part in this educational experience. The youth will get to see the inner workings of a courtroom and our justice system, and might even have lunch in the judges chambers! Everyone is very excited about this trip!
