Congratulations, Winners of the Golden Keyboard!

The 2nd year of Hopeworks' Typing Program for Holy Name students culminated on Wednesday May 22nd and Thursday May 23rd with a pizza party celebrating the students’ success.  32 students were awarded certificates for completion of the program, where students learned proper typing position and improved  their skills with Type To Learn 3. Special congratulations are in order for 3rd graders Kevin Placencia and Luiseidy Castillo and 4th graders Nichee Hill and Jalin Jackson, who won the coveted Golden Keyboard award.  This award is given out to youth whose behavior, effort, and improvement make them stand out among the class.  Congratulations Holy Name!

Inside View: Jamaal Johnson Graduates from Woodrow Wilson High School

Jamaal Johnson has been a member of the Hopeworks community since 2003 when he was a freshman at Woodrow Wilson High School.  This June, he will graduate and attend Camden County College in the Fall.  At Woodrow Wilson, Jamaal is a member of the tennis team, manager of the volleyball team, part of the robotics club and has assisted in school plays.  His outgoing and active personality extends to Hopeworks and everyone knows when he is here because of the energy he brings.  Jamaal enjoyed his time at Hopeworks because of all the new things he learned and all the people he met.   He especially enjoyed working with Leigh Anne, our Literacy Director: “She takes time for you and is great to hang out with… she really helped me get good grades.”  Jamaal will carry his academic aptitude with him to college where he will take business courses in hopes of one day becoming a chef with his own restaurant.

Hope Through School Completes Its First Digital Storytelling Project!

Director of Operations Sean Dougherty and Literacy Director Leigh Anne Purnell worked with the Hope Through School youth to complete their first Digital Storytelling project this month. Day Trainee Kenyatta Benton and Hope Through School trainees: Ashshawna Fabian, Nefertiti Bryant, Nefer Bryant, Javier Ramos, Sylvon Bryant, Luis Rosa, Shakira McDonald, Adriana Castro, Matthew Cooley, Tevin Solomon, Carolin Tejada, Sabrina Velasquez, and Jamaal Johnson worked diligently this month to complete their digital stories. Topics ranged from summer traditions to being a hearing person with deaf parents. Look for the announcement of the Hope Through School Film Festival this summer. We celebrated the end of the Project and the end of Hope Through School with a screening of the films, a pizza party and a trip to see the Camden Riversharks! Congratulations to all of our filmmakers.

Hopeworks Welcomes Sabrina Gomez to the Staff!

I first came to Hopeworks about a year and five months ago and began working as a regular day trainee. While at Hopeworks, I’ve learned things such as how to build websites and also how to be a leader. All of it has helped me grow and opened up a door for me to be a part of this great staff. My new role consists of being Lead Trainer and HTS coordinator and trainer. As the summer comes closer, I look forward to spending time with all of the new and old youth and helping them to learn some of the great things I’ve learned at Hopeworks.
