Hopeworks News: November 2006
| Hopeworks Youth Test Symantec Software!
|
During the month of November Hopeworks youth will participate in a use-case project for the Symantec Customer Service department. In this project, the youth will assess the ease of use of Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus. All Hopeworks youth were invited to apply for the position and we expect 15 youth to participate. On Saturday November 4th, Mario Arriola, Thomas Perez, Miles Roman and Sabrina Gomez met with Project Directors Kenny Thierer and Angel Rodriguez to complete the first two Use-Cases. The Use-Case team purchased and installed Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, taking screen shots and notes to comment on the process. These notes will be compiled and sent to Symantec's customer service department with some ideas as to how to make Symantec products easier to install. |
| Hopeworks "Meets The Parents" At Family Night |
Ten Hopeworks Youth brought their families to Hopeworks on Monday November 6th to celebrate our youth's accomplishments. This was an excellent opportunity for youth to show their parents, siblings, family and friends the exciting things they are accomplishing at Hopeworks, as well as an opportunity for the families to get to know the Hopeworks staff. Families were also shown our new Hopeworks video, taken on tours led by youth, and had the opportunity to meet with staff and ask questions about our program. Hopeworks looks forward to continuing to work with our youth and their families accomplish their goals. Thank you to all the families that participated, and a special thank you to Leigh Anne Purnell and Kathleen Deitch for helping to make this event a huge success!

| GIS Continues Surveying Project In Haddon Township |
The Hopeworks GIS Team has been busy working on a tree survey for the Haddon Township Environmental Commission. Equipped with hand-held computers and measuring tools, the youth have been collecting data about the trees located in the township. Features such as the height, canopy size and species are being recorded. Other factors such as sidewalk damage are also being noted by the team. We hope this information becomes a useful tool for keeping Haddon Township green! |

| Hopeworks Staff Learns About Experiential Leadership |
Sean Dougherty, Todd Mariani, Leigh Anne Purnell, and Kenny Thierer attended an Experiential Leadership seminar at the University of Pennsylvania Campus on Monday October 16th. The focus of the seminar was on how groups interacted with each other. Participants learned about Boundaries, Authority, Roles and Task and got to see trends for themselves in an Arctic Survival Activity, as well as a second Group Dynamics Activity. It was an excellent opportunity for Hopeworks Staff members to learn more about how each of us intereacted in a team setting. |
| Hopeworks Typing Program A Great Success |
Thirty Holy Name Third and Fourth Graders come to Hopeworks for the Holy Name Typing Program every week! JVC Volunteer Kenny Thierer teaches the typing program, which uses the program Type To Learn 3. Holy Name Youth have been learning proper typing positions, familiarizing themselves with the keyboard, and practicing their typing skills. Their energy has been a welcome addition to the Hopeworks Community. Feel free to drop by on a Wednesday or Thursday morning and see for yourself! |
| Hopeworks Youth Do Poetry At Rock The Pen! |
On Tuesday October 17, Literacy Director Leigh Anne Purnell and Hopeworks day trainees: Sabrina Gomez, Airilyvette Roman, Thomas Perez, Jonearl Thompson, Shatonica Dominices, and Sheena Santori traveled to the Painted Bride Art Center’s Rock the Pen program. The trainees engaged in intimate dialogue with local poet Elijah Pringle. They heard him read several of his own pieces. Jonearl Thompson engaged Elijah in a debate over whether today’s rap music can still be considered poetry. The youth were assigned to write a Haiku about rain; Elijah promised a prize for the winning poem. Check back next month to read the winning Haiku! Elijah was so impressed that he asked to work with the youth by conducting a full day writing workshop here at Hopeworks! We can’t wait until our next trip to the Bride!
