Building Accountability

At Hopeworks, we see our relationship with the youth as a partnership.  In this partnership, we are willing to help youth:

  • DREAM
  • Plan for the future
  • Learn new skills
  • Improve literacy (reading & writing)
  • Enhance numeracy (math)
  • Celebrate accomplishments
  • Earn opportunities for a job
  • Travel to conferences, programs or other learning experiences
  • Build a community of care for themselves and other youth
  • Experience support from a talented and loving staff

The youth must then be willing to:

  • Develop a D.R.E.A.M.S. Plan, update it regularly and brief the formation director on it weekly
  • Show up for training, literacy and formation, on-time and prepared, arrangingLearning To Learn Is The Hopeworks Motto!!!! your schedule to do so
  • Learn and ask questions
  • Share with and teach others, including them in their work and progress
  • Respect themselves and others
  • Care for the Hopeworks Community, its building, property and equipment
  • Work hard in a welcoming and professional manner
  • Claim responsibility for your actions and your D.R.E.A.M.S.
  • Grow and let others help you by holding you accountable
  • Ask for support and additional help when you need it

Both Hopeworks and the youth have their responsibilities.  The question then becomes “How do we build accountability for these responsibilities?”  Formation constantly reinforces this idea of a partnership with equal responsibilities that necessitates accountability.  We make sure that the youth know that our staff, partners, donors and clients have committed to Hopeworks by supporing it and helping it grow.  Therefore, we ask the youth to do the same.  We relate every rule and policy of Hopeworks back to this partnership so that each rule and policy has a purpose, defined by a responsibility and supported by the accountability of the Hopeworks community.  We ask the youth, then, to do the same.  By using this approach to disciplinary or compliance issues, we form a willingness within the individual youth to step up and engage fully in all that there is at Hopeworks.
