During the summer of 2007, members of Hopeworks GEB mapped the graves of Civil War veterans in Harleigh Cemetery. The team included: Nefertiti Bryant, Patrick Osborne, Rebecca Schelmety, and Luis Rosa. First, they located the grave by using the cemetery map. After locating the grave they took a picture of the tombstone and then used a GPS unit to mark the grave. That allowed them to make a map of the cemetery that shows all of the veterans’ graves. Our map shows the location of the grave and a picture of the stone, and it has information about each soldier. This project was a great learning experience. The team learned a lot about data collection, image manipulation, Google Earth, and the Civil War.
