Hopeworks GIS Summer Project 2002
Goal: Survey all 33,000 parcels of land in
the City of Camden Youth
Survey Teams:
Three teams of youth, lead by Hopeworks trainees, Ed Figueroa, Manny
Perez and Adrian Polo will survey the City of Camden collecting
data.
The survey will include various data such as the exact point location
of all street lights, trees and other assets, as well as the conditions
of all the streets throughout the city. City-Wide
Parcel Map:
Data collection will be done using a complete parcel map (digitized
tax map) for the City of Camden created by Hopeworks trainees in
the spring of 2002. This is the first parcel map to encompass the
entire city and alone is a valuable asset for organizations throughout
the city.
The Technology
The teams will use Compaq iPAQ handheld computers equipped with
ESRI ArcPad 6.0 software.
Using this technology, the trainees will be able to collect huge
amounts of data on the condition, status and other very detailed
information about Camden. The Result
In addition to training and employing 12 Camden youth in state-of-the-art
GIS technology, the data that is collected will form an extremely
useful resource for people, community organizations and government
working for positive change in the City.
By accurately knowing and assessing the existing conditions, more
informed and effective planning can occur. Further, the data collected
will allow for more accurate assessment of the success of various
programs.
