Hopeworks News: June 2003

Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

This summer Hopeworks will hit high gear by offering summer programming in three areas: GIS, Video and Web Site design. A complete listing of our available summer programming and jobs can be found by clicking here.

Hope Through School
The Hope Through School Program ended its second year at the end of May. The program was a resounding success, having had XXX amount of youth participate in the program. Two of our graduates, Juan Corona and Angel Rodriguez, have been hired to help teach in HopeworksVideo this summer. Youth earned over XXX of college credits with Angel Rodriguez, who just completed his JavaScript test, taking home 12 credits himself!

Trainees Participate In Online GIS Course

The new crew of GIS youth—Josh, Jashua, Elyse, Mario and Endrix-- who were hired in April have been hard at work with their training, preparing for client work and the summer ahead. One part of their training is to to take an online class from the University of Montana. As part of that class, each of the youth has to produce a GIS project. The projects are exciting and a brief summary of each can be found by clicking here.

Using Skills In The Community

HopeworksHardware is doing well. A team of three youth has successfully set up a wireless network in the offices of Camden Lutheran Housing and Camden Center for Law and Social Justice. Both clients are very excited about their new broadband connections and computer upgrades!

On The Move

San Diego: Hopeworks will again be heading to San Diego to attend the ESRI conference. We are planning on bringing 10 youth with us this year (up from 4 last year!).

Of special note, Hopeworks will be highlighted on the main stage during the opening plenary session. To prepare for this, ESRI sent a video crew to Hopeworks last month. The crew spent two days filming and interviewing all sorts of people. It was exciting and we are happy to be going!

• Congratulations to Marcus Williams, James Jones, Mark Ford and Rolando Pomales who all completed successful semesters of college. Next year, they should be joined by at least seven more Hopeworks youth who will be entering the hallowed halls of higher education.

• Congratulations to Danny Sanchez, Juan Ayala, jr. and Erica Lundberg who all began their college careers this month by taking computer animation at Camden County College. Erica and Juan are registered to begin their first semester in college come September.

• Congratulations to Danny Sanchez for completing his Illustrator and Photoshop tests. Danny can now receive 3 college credits in Computer Graphics at Camden County College.

• Congratulations to Frank Cook who had an article published in this month's issue of the Harvard Business Review. The article is titled "Uncovering Hidden Value in a Midsize Manufacturing Company."

You can read an abstract by clicking here.

• April Claggett (former web designer here at Hopeworks) and her husband Jonathon had their first child in April. Welcome to our world Caleb Claggett!
