Alternate Route to a Diploma
The Ability to Benefit program is a Federal program that allows youth over the age of 18, who test at or above level 2 of the Accuplacer test, to qualify for financial aid in the form of a grant for their first 30 course hours. Youth who successfully qualify for this program are able to enter college. Once in college, youth have the opportunity to take any developmental classes that they need. Upon completing 10 college level classes, youth then qualify to take the High School Proficiency Assessment. Youth will have to take and perform at a proficient or advanced proficient level of achievement in all sections of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) test in order to qualify to receive their diploma. Thus, while working toward an Associates Degree, youth are able to earn their high school diploma. Click here for more information on New Jersey’s alternate routes to a diploma.
