College Experience
Hopeworks College Workshop
The goal of the college workshop is to provide support for college enrolled trainees. Workshop participants are expected to achieve course grades of no less than C. However, all workshop participants strive to obtain A’s in their courses.
Once youth begin taking college courses they become a part of the college workshop. The literacy office is always available to college enrolled trainees. Each college enrolled trainee is offered two hours of individual literacy every week during the first semester. College enrolled trainees receive one hour of literacy per week in subsequent semesters. In addition to that, each college trainee participates in a one hour group each week (college workshop). The actual workshop provides the trainees with an opportunity to discuss their experiences. They report on positive and negative experiences of the previous week, plan for upcoming exams and projects, and use each other as resources. Youth keep track of assignments, exams, and projects using a planner and the wall calendars in the Literacy office. If a youth enters Hopeworks as a college student, they are automatically a part of the workshop, no TABE is necessary.
Hopeworks provides the following services to college-enrolled trainees:
- Assistance with enrollment, registration, financial aid
- Assistance with communicating with the school
- Tutoring
- Study space
- Assistance with course selection
- Assistance with organization and time management
- Proofreading
