Encourager Activities

Week 1   Week 2   Week 3
Week 4   Week 5   Week 6

Here are suggested topics/samples of communication with the Hopeworks trainee. If you’re having difficulty with these suggestions or need additional suggestions, please contact the Hopeworks Formation Director (mentoring@hopeworks.org) at any time.

Week 1. Introduction note   [Top]

Write a note introducing yourself and welcoming the trainee to
Hopeworks. An example:

Dear Jason,

Welcome to Hopeworks. My name is Joey Langan and I’m writing to you to tell you I care about you and want to see you succeed in your training at Hopeworks. I know that sometimes learning new things can be frustrating, but hang in there – you can do it!

Good luck with your training!
Joey

Week 2. The trainee is probably either in HTML I or Internet Basics. When she completes Internet Basics, she has earned 3 hours of credit at Camden County College.   [Top]

Dear Michelle,

How’s HTML I going? I hear that tables are really challenging. Keep up the good work! Are you interested in going to college? Have you taken the credit test for Internet basics yet? If so, you’re already on your way to getting credits at Camden County College.

Have a great week!
Joey

Week 3. Photoshop is part of the curriculum. This is where a trainee learns how to take pictures with a digital camera, scan pictures and manipulate images. He gets to take a picture of himself and put it on the wall at Hopeworks at the end of Photoshop training. This is a great milestone. You could ask if he is going to do anything special with his picture.   [Top]

      Dear Jason,

How’s everything going this week? Have you started Photoshop yet? Make sure you send me your picture when you’re done with it. Are you going to do anything special with your picture? I can’t wait to see your picture on the wall. You’re doing great! Keep up the good work!

Joey

Week 4. Encouragement

Dear Michelle,

I can’t believe you’ve been at Hopeworks for five weeks now. Congratulations! I just want you to know that I hope everything’s going well for you and that I care about your success.

Joey

Week 5. At this point, the trainee could be in a number of different levels. Ask him what level he is at. You could also ask him if he has started thinking about his personal web site.   [Top]

Dear Jason,

How is training going? What kinds of things have you learned so far? What are you learning about now? Do you know what you’re going to do your personal website on? I’m sure it will be awesome. I hope you have a great week!

Take care,
Joey

Week 6. This will be your last week as an encourager. You've helped this trainee complete the curriculum and have provided invaluable support. The trainee will now be assigned a mentor.

Dear Michelle,

I’m so happy that I got to e-mail you. This is my last week to e-mail you because you’ll be getting a mentor soon. I wish you continued success at Hopeworks and in everything you do in your life. Good luck in the future!

Take care,
Joey
