Florio Invests in the Future of Camden's Youth
Bridging the "Digital Divide," the firm of the former NJ Governor is venturing with
Hopeworks, a non-profit based in Camden.
(Camden, NJ) - Standing alongside community leaders, members of the clergy and elected officials in the City
where his career in public service began, former New Jersey Governor Jim Florio unveiled a unique
public/private partnership with Hopeworks - a Camden-based Non-profit organization dedicated to helping the
City's underprivileged youth pursue educational and career opportunities. Florio's firm, XSPAND manages the
collection of delinquent tax liens, hired Hopeworks to create a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) map.
"I'm proud to give back to the City that has stood by me all these years," said Florio, a former Camden
resident who represented the City as a State Assemblyman, U.S. Representative and Governor. "It's time for
those in the private sector to realize the importance of investing in our urban centers. If you're going to
talk the talk, then you should walk the walk. Our young men and women deserve no less," he added.
XSPAND was engaged by the City of Camden and the Camden County Improvement Authority to inventory every
municipally owned parcel of land and every parcel that has a lien on it. Hopeworks will prepare a map that
geographically shows the status of the properties inventoried by XSPAND. This GIS map will be an invaluable
tool in attracting development to Camden and contributing to the rebirth of the city.
"This partnership will provide us with ability to map data and graphically provide the City of Camden
with a better understanding of their tax delinquencies and redevelopment opportunities," said Jim Florio,
CEO of XSPAND continued.
"Camden's youth live lives filled with uncertainty. Daily, they worry about their own safety and the
safety of their families. Our partnership with XSPAND gives them jobs and gives them hope." said Father
Jeff Putthoff, Executive Director of Hopeworks. "Hopeworks exists for two reasons. One is to reduce the
high school dropout rate for youth in Camden. The other is to create hope-filled futures for youth through
good-paying jobs, business development and educational opportunities. Governor Florio understands
Hopeworks' mission and we are pleased to be working with XSPAND." said Father Jeff.
"Today's announcement is special for me and the residents of Camden. This public/private partnership
will provide jobs and encourage our young men and women to pursue higher education. The Mayor and Council
look forward to working closely with XSPAND in attracting development to Camden and in rebuilding our city,"
stated Mayor Gwendolyn Faison.
