Let’s Build Computers Javier and Liliana proudly show off the custom made computers they built. |
Javier assembling the inner workings of his new computer | HopeworksHardware saw its first graduates build their own computers from scratch this month. After completing the 60 hours of training, each youth received $650 to buy the components for their computers. Monitors were donated by PSE&G. Another group of youth will begin their training in early December.

News article from the Camden Diocesan newspaper about the event.
CAMDEN - The way business owner Carlos Vazquez sees it, he is just "giving back to the community" by taking part in a pilot computer program funded by grant money. But for a handful of inner-city youth at Hopeworks 'N Camden, it is definitely more. The pilot program called "Hopeworks Hardware", is not only teaching inner city kids how to build and repair computers. It is also helping them building their own personal computer to take home for free. Read full article

GIS helps Community Group improve their neighborhood
A local community Weed & Seed group used
maps made by Hopeworks GIS to advocate for more streetlights in
their neighborhood. A map demonstrating the lack of adequate
lighting in their area helped them convince civic leaders of the
need for additional lighting to be installed.
Carol Dann, director of Camden Renaissance "By working with
Hopeworks, we had the hard data to show where streetlights were needed
in the Weed and Seed area of North Camden. With this
information, we were able to successfully advocate for
additional street lighting in the 10th and Elm street area."
Lillian Santiago, local resident: "The map allowed us to get more lighting for the neighborhood. This helps our neighborhood be safer for the seniors and youth who are out at night. I think it is a great thing that Hopeworks is doing for the people of North Camden--they are helping make it safer for people to walk here at night."
Hopeworks is proud to continue to work with Weed and Seed, both in
providing useful neighborhood level data and also in providing a
safe haven for youth.
