Hopeworks and Camden Housing Authority Announce New Partnership

Hopeworks and the Camden Housing Authority are partnering to provide a two-year program that will make Hopeworks web and GIS training available to 50 Camden Housing youth. In addition to the training, annually there will be an opportunity for 20 youth to hold a part-time job at Hopeworks (5 every school year and 15 during each of the two summers). Youth will also have the opportunity to earn college credit from Camden County College and the University of Montana. The program begins this January when 15 youth begin initial web training.

For my project, I wanted to research the relationship between murder locations and vacant buildings. My scenario was that the Police of Camden wanted a map of North Camden to help them determine if there was a relationship between murder locations and vacant buildings. They wanted to use the map to help them determine where to put a new police station and where to station police officers.

This map was a final project for a college course I was taking online for the University of Montana on ArcView GIS. The purpose of creating this map was to show the locations of hazardous waste sites in Philadelphia County and the surrounding areas with the total population of the people living nearby. The reason for this is to help identify areas of the city that have higher risk of becoming harmful places to live.

I came up with a scenario to examine possible causes for fires occurring in North Camden. I hypothesized that a lack of street lights could be one possible cause. I created maps to see if there was a relationship between fire calls and street light density.

My scenario maps the location of the parishioners of Holy Name Church. If Holy Name wanted to expand any of their ministries, a map displaying the population density of their parishioners would help them choose the best location to reach the most people. I also included poverty data from the 2000 US Census to help them determine where the best place would be to start up a ministry for those parishioners in need - for example a food pantry.

Hopeworks GIS Visits Penn State University

On December 6, 2002 six Hopeworks trainees traveled from Camden, NJ to State College, PA for a personalized tour of Penn State University. We came at the invitation of Chris Pfeiffer and Maurie Kelly of (PASDA), one of the main hubs of geographic information systems at the University and across the state of Pennsylvania.
